The School Of Narrative Dance, 2013 - ongoing

Peformance, Photography and Video

In 2013 Marinella Senatore founded The School of Narrative Dance, focused on the idea of storytelling as an experience that can be explored choreographically, on non-hierachical learning, self-training and the creation of an active citizenship through informal education. Nomadic and free of charge, the School takes different forms depending on the spaces it temporarily occupies, and proposes an alternative system of education, based on emancipation, inclusion, and self-cultivation. The School offeres a wide range of classes in subjects such as literature, oral history, carpentry, art history, crafts, photography, arithmetic, drama, choreography, cinematic language, etc., encouraging individuals to share their skills or achieve new ones, building new groups and ideas of community. To date, the School‘s projects – produced by Istitutions, Museums and Foundations – have been developed in several countries in Europe and US, with the involvement of political activists, scholars, artisans, illiterate people, students, housewifes, musicians, writers, worker unions, retireds, teachers, feminist choirs and Alpines.
The work uses dance as a common language through which to celebrate the vernacular, amateur, and professionally trained gestures of the participants.

In Cuenca (Ecuador), the entire city was involved: Conservatory providing hall for rehearsals, local musicians composing scores for the several performances, public and private building offering their spaces, as well as Traditional folk dance groups, boarding school band, teachers, and a large number of amateur and professional dancers wanted to experience a different approach about storytelling and theatre dance.
Each performance, including a final Parade, was located in a different place (exterior and interior) of the city and structured always according with the landscape which was the main narrative topic participants wanted to work on.

A non-regulational institution, this School promotes the creation of alternative forms of narration through body language. Without being rooted in specific techniques, this method gives preference to an exchange of knowledge and experience, displayed by participants with movement and dance. By inventing its own spaces each time, for the show at the Castello di Rivoli the School occupies a surface of almost 50 square meters at the Manica Lunga. Six monitors with six “tutorials” proposed introductory ideas, presenting short choreographed sequences. The floor was covered with a large vinyl dance carpet that offered the chance to try suggested movement first-hand, or develop free invention. For the entire duration of this show the space has been used for encounters and rehearsals for the Public Parade organized by the artist in conjunction with the exhibition on November 24, 2013, which built for a while a new community around Castello di Rivoli, linking, in the context of the project, different groups from widely different localities, from Val Susa to Turin. By booking its use, anyone also used free of charge the dance carpet during museum hours as a contribution to any new project developments.

On MAXXI’s piazza and along its staircases the exhibition route continues with The School of Narrative Dance, Roma by Marinella Senatore, a traveling school free of charge where anyone can teach or be a student, in which the public takes on a leading role in the process of assembling the work. The classroom built right on the piazza itself by the group of British architects ASSEMBLE, is conceived as an ideal set to host the lessons of a broad range of subjects and trades. The experiences of the lessons will then flow into a theater-dance performance directed by the choreographers of the Berlin group ESPZ. The exhibition project then continues along MAXXI’s staircases, where display cases contain the works that are the result of the lessons.
