Andreas Baader

1943 in Munich (Germany) - † 1977 in Stuttgart (Germany)

From the very beginning Andreas Baader lived a double life; many of his contemporaries seem to have been totally unaware of his creative side. Predominantly this might have been due to the aggressive persona he presented to the world, using violence both against himself and others. Alongside his political activities, however, Baader immersed himself intensively in his installation work. Sadly few of these have survived. One, however, can be found within an archive in Frankfurt. The Record-Player, is a piece created by Baader in 1976.

Baaders activities were directed against the state and its members. He tried, by various means, to bring down the ruling order and throw the bourgeoisie into disarray; all this, it seems, in order to draw maximum attention to himself as an artist. He founded a group, the R.A.F (Red Army Fraction) who, in contrast to other groups around at the same time, acted in a genuinely militaristic manner: setting department stores in Frankfurt alight, for example. All actions were followed by debate and discussions of the artists intentons. These activities were instigated so as to be doomed to failure, right from the outset. They were directed against the Powers-That-Be in general. The states only appropriate response was to assume the same methods as the group, using these as guide-lines, it seems, in their retalation.
With their self-fulfiling prophecy of failure the group placed themselves firmly within the romantic tradition of lonely, unknown Artist; achieving social relevance at the same time.
The piece Saltpetre was created some time between 1970 and 1972. Ten zinc buckets, loosely grouped together, are set slightly apart from one another. In each bucket an electric grinder skulks; the grinders are bound to one another by copper electrical wires. Possibly it had been Baaders intention for the piece to self-destruct. Explosive residues were found clinging to these grinders, which leads one to assume that these instruments had been utilised in the production of explosives. In the aforementioned grouping, however, any contact with the explosive material whatsoever would have blown the whole lot to smithereens.
From this point of view the symbolic connotations of the arrangement are thrown into a completely new light: we seem to be confronted with nothing short of a self-portrait: the group as explosive matter per se. Each individual represented by a single grinder; isolated in a harsh unyielding world.

The Cabinet of Ramon Haze

The Cabinet of Ramon Haze is a unique collection and 20th century art document. It brings together more than 150 key works by artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Andreas Baader, Ruth Tauer and Jeff Koons, and traces the developement of their Ouevre and its conceptual foundations. Ramon Haze's historical research reconstructs lost knowledge of the development of the art of the past century, and in doing so paints a picture of the political and social upheavals that have been reflected in the artistic production of the last cultural epoch. Since 1996, Ramon Hazes collection curators Holmer Feldmann and Andreas Grahl have been in charge of the "Cabinet", and they have been instrumental in making it accessible to the public and helping to understand the lost notion of art.
