Kurt Helm

1967 in Husum Beach (Germany) - † 2037 in Leipzig (Germany)

Kurt Helm´s career did not progress in the typical manner. The installations for which he is now famous were not created until the end of his life. Initially a painter, he had studied at the Hamburg Academy of Art, but he had never had much success with this.

The 3rd of October, the first of Helm´s installations, was created in 1997 shortly after his move from Hamburg to Chemnitz. The piece consists of a kitchen-unit positioned on a tin-floor surrounded by countless bundles of newspaper and an arrangement of boxes filled with empty bottles. The unit was positioned so precariously that it was in constant danger of toppling over. The artist saw this as a suitable political allegory.
Still in Chemnitz Helm created his first animal tableaux. He did not amass his full cast of characters until his arrival in Leipzig, where he set up his studio in an old factory building and in 1998 began work on The Big State Circus. This major work comprised a number of separate tableaux. Over the years it grew to an unmanageable size; the significances of the individual tableaux were swallowed up by the colourful melange. Apart from several individual figures whose exact position in the grand scheme of things cannot be ascertained, all remaining figures have been appropriately accommodated within the Cabinet.
The cast of characters consists of a mixture of mythological figures and extinct animals. Their gestures have a stunningly anthropomorphic quality. Particularly remarkable are their facial expressions which range from heart-rending apathy to inane joviality.
Kurt Helm always rejected the possibility of rebuilding the piece. The uniqueness of this sprawling work thereby rests assured. To protect the authenticity he sold the installation off as separate tableaux. It is this fragmentation which makes the reconstruction process so difficult today.

Bereits in Chemnitz schuf Kurt Helm erste Tiergruppen.

The Cabinet of Ramon Haze

The Cabinet of Ramon Haze is a unique collection and 20th century art document. It brings together more than 150 key works by artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Andreas Baader, Ruth Tauer and Jeff Koons, and traces the developement of their Ouevre and its conceptual foundations. Ramon Haze's historical research reconstructs lost knowledge of the development of the art of the past century, and in doing so paints a picture of the political and social upheavals that have been reflected in the artistic production of the last cultural epoch. Since 1996, Ramon Hazes collection curators Holmer Feldmann and Andreas Grahl have been in charge of the "Cabinet", and they have been instrumental in making it accessible to the public and helping to understand the lost notion of art.
